Meet Dan, a Visual Development Artist at Industrial Brothers!

Swipe through to see a few pieces of his artwork, and get to know him a bit below.

What inspired you to work in animation?
When I was attending The University of Maine, I worked at the YMCA After School Care program with a bunch of 10 year olds. I had always enjoyed drawing characters but nothing was ever too serious. During “Movie Fridays” I would draw pictures of the characters of the films we were watching for the kids, and I absolutely fell in love with it. I went to see the movie ‘UP’ and realized that I wanted to create inspiring films like that.

What Industrial Brothers production(s) do you work on?
I work as a visual development artist so I get to have my hands on everything, but I’m also proud to be currently working on our newest IP, Daniel Spellbound? as a senior designer.

Are there any other creative disciplines you do in your spare time?
I’m big into photography?. It’s like practicing light and composition without having to draw. I also digitally sculpt in Zbrush and with my Oculus when I have some free time.

Is there any accomplishment in particular that you are most proud of to date?
Although I’ve come a long way from where I was in school, my 4th year film at Sheridan College was and still is a significant accomplishment, as well as the production design work I did on Top Wing for Industrial Brothers. It was my first big project in the industry and I feel it turned out really well.

Do you have a tip or piece of advice for aspiring animators?
It’s cliche to say it but just keep drawing every day. Fill up sketchbooks and try to stay curious about things like story?, or characters?, or how light? behaves – whatever you’re interested in, just strive to master that.
That being said, its extremely important to have balance in your life. Go out and see friends, play recreational sports, have a life outside of art. Work to live, not live to work!

Great advice for anyone, Dan!
