Molison Farmer

Introducing Molison Farmer, a Production Coordinator on Dino Ranch – Season 3 who is also a rescue dog mom, avid hiker, webcomic author/producer, and former real-life rancher! She also recently wrapped up her role as a Coordinator on Daniel Spellbound, which is now streaming on Netflix.

Molison is an integral part of the production team and process, but is not an ‘artist’ in the traditional sense. Instead, her artwork is making complicated production schedules work, solving problems, and supporting other artists.

Let’s get to know her better below!

What inspired you to work in animation?

I spent a lot of my life watching animated films and cartoons and wishing there was a way I could help bring them to life (my favourites are Up and Fantastic Mr. Fox). I often thought it was too late for me to learn, or that the animation world was a closed door for someone who can’t even draw a stick figure. I spent about a decade writing and directing plays for kids around Canada and really loved making content for kids. It was through theatre that I developed my love for producing and production, and could finally see where I could fit into the animation world.

Eventually I quit my job, went back to school, and pursued my pipe dream of working in animation.

What is your favorite thing about what you do?

I love supporting artists, problem solving, and getting to work on the big picture puzzle pieces of getting a project from start to finish. I think production has a big role in making sure artists get a good work/life balance, so one of my favourite tasks is reworking the schedule so people can attend their kids’ dance recitals, pick their kids up from school, go on vacations, take a sick day… you name it.

Do you have a tip or piece of advice for aspiring animators/production staff?

Never be afraid to ask for help. Ask enough people (politely…) and the right team of mentors will get you where you’re meant to be. Embrace learning and be humble.

Are there any creative disciplines that you do in your spare time?

I spend all my spare time in the wilderness with my three-legged rescue dog Spinelli. We recently went on a 3 week camping trip in Lake Superior, hiking about 130 KMs total and up to the top of Sleeping Giant.

Here’s some Fun Facts about Molison:

I used to be a snowboard racer, tap dancer, and worked on a real live ranch (with horses… not dinosaurs).

I also wrote a webcomic at www.campcoupcomic.com with illustrator Mirka Loiselle (pictured). Check it out!

Thank you for all of your care and hard work, Molison!

You make IB more fun, and we love having you on the team.
